My girlfriend and I met up with 3 of our friends at the highly recommended Cuban Revolution on Valley St. in Providence. There was a lot of excitement, anticipation, and high expectations. I'll admit the food and drinks were good - nothing too special - and moderately priced. My number one deterrent from ever going again isn't the food or drinks but the absolutely horrendous customer service.
In settling our bill, two of my friends wanted their own separate checks and had let the waitress know and she said "ok, no problem...just let me know how much to put on the cards." Simple enough, right? This happens all the time in restaurants. Ten minutes later, who appeared to be her manager or supervisor, (Christophe S I believe) came by and asked if the two cardholders could itemize on the bill what they wanted to be charged on the cards because they were having a hard time closing out. Simple enough again, right? Well, about 5 minutes after that, Christophe came by again and asked if the cash portion of the bill could be taken off the bill and the balance be paid by the cards. We figured, sure - no problem - that was easy and simple enough. When he came back, he let us know what the balance was (about $25 or so). My two friends then let him know to just split the difference between the 2 cards.
At this moment, Christophe S appeared to have reached his boiling point. Not only did he have a pissed off expression on his face, he proceeded to roll his eyes in front of us! (now I can somewhat understanding having that reaction when your back is turned to your customers...but right in front of them??) He then went to the computer and started smacking the credit cards on the screen and seemed to be quite frustrated. At no point in time were we ever curt or rude to him or the waitress. In fact, I think we were quite polite and accommodating. Our main shock was his reaction to patrons who wanted to settle their bill and get him and his staff paid for their service.
When Christophe finally came back, the bill seemed to be all set. One would think a typical closing from him would be "sorry about that, thank you come again blah blah blah..." Not from this guy. He proceeded to bitch us out and lecture us on how to be good patrons and let the waitress know from the get go that there would be separate checks. (Certainly we can understand that we may have been at fault.) He continued "PLEASE let us know at the beginning ESPECIALLY on a busy Friday night"
The kicker of the night, ladies and gentlemen: there were maybe 2 people at the bar and ONE other table of perhaps 3 or 4 people.
We understand that we may not have had the easiest of bills to settle from a server standpoint. We can certainly understand the frustration had it actually been a "busy Friday night". What we do NOT understand is the reaction from an employee whose position centers around customer service with a smile. In general, my friends and I are not angry people but we were just in complete shock that we just sat there silently. Again, we were nothing but polite and cooperative during this whole situation.
If you want great food and great service with a smile - I recommend going anywhere but here. If you want to feel like shit, get lectured, have a night out amongst friends get ruined, I highly recommend this fine establishment.
Hope this helps
