FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF)

FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) kicks off its 14th annual event August 10 – 15th, with films and filmmakers arriving from across the globe. RIIFF is New England's largest, most prestigious AND ONLY OSCAR QUALIFYING film festival. Ranked as one of the Top 12 Film Festivals in the United States, RIIFF serves as an annual showcase for international and independent film within the Rhode Island and southern New England area. This year, over 200 narrative, documentary and short films from 53 countries will be screened over a six-day period in locations throughout the state of Rhode Island.

The films were selected from a record entry base of over 4,200 submissions and represent 35 World and 23 US/North American Premieres.Throughout its successful 14-year run, RIIFF has received both national and international recognition. It was listed in the Providence Business News as one of the Top 25 year-round events in Rhode Island. The Boston Globe’s Newenglandtravel.com named RIIFF as one of the top five New England film festivals. And, it was listed in Moviemaker Magazine as one of the “Top 25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee.” The 2010 Festival promises to continue this proud tradition of excellence as New England’s premiere film festival.

For the first time, the Festival’s Opening Night festivities will be held at the VMA Arts & Cultural Center, the elegant and historic 1,900-seat theater located in the state’s capital city. "Without question, this has been a year of change and growth for the Festival,” said RIIFF Executive Director George T. Marshall.
Courage to Walk by Bob Waxler is a Father’s Song to His Younger Son

“Adult children are always still your children, no matter how old they are. You stay attached to them forever. Their joy is your joy; their terror your terror. That bond, established at birth, stretches through a lifetime; it continues beyond the grave. That bond is timeless, everlasting.” From A Courage to Walk

Bob Waxler

Courage to Walk by Bob Waxler is a Father’s Song to His Younger Son

Two healthy sons were born to Bob and Linda Waxler in a loving story arc of courtship, marriage, pregnancy and birth. Jonathan and Jeremy Waxler, born in 1969 and 1974, respectively, were normal little boys who grew to exceed all of their loving parents’ hopes and dreams. Bob, a university English professor, and Linda, a high school math teacher, were living their idyll of a close family circle embraced by an extended family and community in Dartmouth and New Bedford, Massachusetts.

But then the story’s brotherly, parabolic arcs went horribly awry: Jonathan Waxler died in 1995 at 26 of a heroin overdose (Losing Jonathan Spinner Publications 2003), and Jeremy, a 33 year-old attorney, nearly died in 2008 of a spinal cord trauma, the implications of which his father explores in his new book Courage to Walk (Spinner Publications 2010).

“The love a father feels for a son is beyond the boundaries of language as is the loss of a son, but both books try to capture that sense of love and the sense of mortality that we all share,” Waxler said in an interview with blogger Jerry Waxler (no relation).

In Courage to Walk, Bob Waxler unravels a medical mystery --ala TV’s medical drama House-- in which a team of physicians at St. Luke’s ,the local Southcoast community hospital, and specialists at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston use the latest medical technology and surgical skill to detect, diagnose and treat the cause of Jeremy Waxler’s sudden paralysis in his legs.

“Compared to Losing Jonathan, Courage to Walk was written over a relatively short period of time, and it captures the curve of the family experience as it unfolds over a relatively short period of time as well. In many ways, though, I think it is a more complex and probing story and meditation... I hope people will find it helpful,” Bob Waxler said.

Robert P. Waxler is a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He is a co-founder of Changing Lives through Literature, an alternative sentencing program. Linda Waxler taught mathematics at Dartmouth High School. Jeremy Waxler is a graduate of Tufts University and Suffolk University Law School. He entered the Massachusetts Bar in 2000. They live in Dartmouth.

Dr. Waxler will be reading from Courage to Walk on July 15th at 5:30 pm at the Brown University Bookstore. The event is free and open to the public.
